The Truth About Comfort Food
As much as I learned to work through emotional eating years ago,
I still struggle with it a bit from time to time.
When I do, I LOVE to keep in mind this quote…
“Comfort food isn’t comforting if it’s causing you pain” (and I would add “or making you ill”).
And there it is…the truth about comfort food.
I heard this quote from my beautiful friend, author, and autoimmune podcast host, Eileen Laird of Phoenix Helix. while we were recording a podcast together earlier this year about autoimmune flares.
We were chatting about how during an autoimmune flare,
we sometimes just want to reach for ALL the comfort food.
Then she said this quote, and I instantly loved it!
Here’s the Thing…
Because there’s this thing I’ve been hearing a lot about this year.
I can best describe it as an anti-diet movement…
an eat whatever feels best for your body movement.
Which a big part of me absolutely LOVES because I am an intuitive healthy eater.
However, a part of me also cringes…
because as much as I may wish we did not have diets or labels for the way we eat,
finding “AIP” was instrumental to starting my wellness journey.
It’s what I personally needed…
my jumping off point.
I needed that list of foods to include and foods to exclude for a time (I’ve since reintroduced many foods).
You see…when I started AIP,
ALL of my comfort foods were on the exclude list.
I NEVER would have given them up without learning about AIP.
Ironically, those comfort foods were harming my health….which is anything but comforting.
I also learned I could find new comfort foods that support my health, and I love them!
What I Need You to Understand
If you are struggling with feeling stress or overwhelm right now…
I highly encourage you to find comfort foods that help you feel your best and live your best life!
Find comfort foods that support your health, instead of cause you pain.
It may take some trial and error, and some time to find comfort foods that also help you feel your best, but it’s worth it!
It is truly worth every effort.
Put in the hard work.
Make the hard choices.
What feels so difficult today will become easier in time.
As you progress in your wellness journey, always remember the truth about comfort food…if it’s causing you pain, it’s not comforting you.
I believe in you, and I am sending you lots of love and support – you got this!
